Nieuwjaarsconcerten met James Lisney Chopin en Schubert

James Lisney

For the past three decades, Lisney has established a reputation as a distinguished Schubertian through his recordings and regular sonata cycles performed throughout Europe and the United States. He is currently performing a Schubert Sonata Cycle at the Gewandhaus in Leipzig, in Oxford – and he will be the first pianist to perform the integrale in Mumbai. For Lisney, the music of Schubert provides endless interest with its fusion of lyricism, poetry and drama – and he has explored much more than the piano music, having enjoyed exciting collaborations with some of Europe’s finest singers and chamber musicians, including Dame Emma Kirkby, Lorna Anderson, James Gilchrist and Maarten Koningsberger.

In addition, his reputation as an interpreter of Chopin’s piano music involves the pedagogic heritage or his celebrated teacher Phyllis Sellick. She studied in Paris in the 1930s with Isidore Phillip, who studied with George Mathias – one of the most significant pupil’s of Chopin – and James feels that much of what he was taught was central to Chopin’s philosophy as a musician, pianist and human being. In 2016 James celebrated fifty years at the keyboard with performances of the complete Chopin Nocturnes in France. The experience of presenting the entire oeuvre has given Lisney renewed respect for Chopin’s genius and he has found that Schubert and Chopin’s music complement each other perfectly.

A thoughtful and perceptive Schubertian Gramophone Magazine

“Lisney impressed with his clarity of sound and his ability to elucidate the shape of the music and to stand back a little from it as if in modest deference …. exquisitely controlled performances.” The Times (Chopin recital at Wigmore Hall, London)
